About the Association

Taiwan's national Taoist organization since 1966

The Taoist Association (formally the Taoist Association of the Republic of China, 中華民國道教會) was founded in Taipei on 13 February 1966. Its first chairman was Chang En-pu (張恩溥), the 63rd Celestial Master in the lineage of Zhang Daoling — a succession that reaches back to the very beginnings of organized Taoism.

Our mission, in the words of our charter: to elucidate Taoist teaching, uphold its precepts, promote the Way and protect the nation, serve society, strengthen righteous faith, and work toward harmony in the world.

Under the current chairman, Chang Cheng (張檉) — a former secretary-general of the Association — Taoist Day (the first day of the lunar new year) gained official recognition in Taiwan's national calendar of commemorations.

Organization

The Association links six provincial-level Taoist associations (Taiwan Province, Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung) and eighteen county- and city-level associations, with five standing committees for outreach, volunteers, youth, women and academic study. In 1989 it founded the Taoist Academy (中華道教學院), registered with the Ministry of the Interior.
