Visiting a Taoist Temple

Etiquette for first-time visitors

There is no need to be nervous on your first visit to a Taoist temple (宮觀). The heart of Taoist etiquette is a single word: reverence (誠敬) — dress neatly, keep a respectful bearing, and give or participate as you are able.

A few practical customs that visitors find helpful:

EnteringStep over the threshold rather than on it; enter by the side of the gate rather than the center, which is reserved for the deities.
IncenseOffer incense with both hands. If you are unsure of the local sequence of altars, temple volunteers will gladly guide you.
PhotographyAsk before photographing altars or ceremonies; some rites are not to be photographed.
CeremoniesDuring a liturgy (科儀 keyi), observe quietly from the sides. Sitting or standing is fine — sincerity matters more than form.
